Nathan Trott has returned to British football after joining Cardiff City on a season-long loan from Danish side FC Copenhagen.

Trott, who played in England for West Ham United, has settled in quickly at League One Cardiff and is looking forward to challenging for the goalkeeper spot.

“It’s a great move for me and I’ve spoken with Brian [Cardiff manager Brian Barry-Murphy] about the direction he wants the club to go in, and it’s something I want to be a part of,” Trott told WalesOnline.

"I’m no stranger to new environments and learning new things – I see that as a strength. This is a huge moment for me in my career and I’m happy to be here.”

City boss Barry-Murphy has made no secret of his high expectations for the new signing.

“We want to recruit absolute quality in every area of the pitch and players that can play the way we see the club playing as we move forward – and Nathan embodies all of that,” he said.

"I've known and watched Nathan play for a long time. I actually managed against him when he was on loan at Wimbledon. He fits the mould of the player we want to attract to the club.

"He’s still very young, has a high level of skill, and real room for growth. That’s the challenge we’ll put to him. We’ll also be looking to him to bring leadership qualities to the squad.”

It is understood that Trott's deal includes an option to buy should the Bluebirds achieve promotion back to the Sky Bet Championship this season.

The former England youth international is Cardiff’s first summer signing and could potentially make his club debut away to Port Vale in their league clash on Thursday.

Trott is also poised to come up against compatriot Nahki Wells, who made his debut for League One rivals Luton Town last week.

The 26-year-old comes with a wealth of experience from playing across Europe after beginning his youth career with Spanish side Valencia before joining West Ham in 2016. He also had loan spells at AFC Wimbledon, French side Nancy and Danish outfit Vejle before making a permanent switch to Copenhagen last year.

Trott featured in 17 of Copenhagen’s 32 games in the Superliga last season, winning nine, drawing five and losing three of his games between the posts. He also made ten appearances for the club in the Europa Conference League as they reached the round of 16 before losing over two legs to Chelsea.

Trott also savoured success with his parent club last season, picking up a league winners’ medal after they clinched the Superliga title.
