Bermuda’s junior golfers have left the island to compete at the prestigious North America Cup in Toronto.

Flying the island’s flag at the tournament are Lachlan Soutter, Cole Graham, Fletcher Logie, Isaac Davis, Camilo Legere, Darina Betschart, Arman Newton and Lewis MacFarlane, with the players accompanied by head of delegation Tamara Betschart.

The players are on their way after the Bermuda Golf Association accepted an invitation from the Canadian Junior Golf Association as part of an endeavour to strengthen ties.

“This is something that happened years ago with the Atlantic Cup and Craig Brown [BGA president] has worked tirelessly to try to get this relationship back with the Canadian Golf Association and Canadian Junior Golf Association,” said Darrin Lewis, the Bermuda Golf Association general secretary.

“This is a great step in that direction for our juniors coming through. Some of our players have done really well at Pinehurst and the Optimist Junior Golf Programme in Miami leading up to this event and we are looking for good things from them.

“They are all in good spirits and hopefully they do well and we continue to build from there.”

Bermuda’s team will also include three guest players who have yet to be confirmed.

“We will have three guest players playing with us to make up the team,” Lewis said.

“We don’t have enough players at the moment, which is something we are working on in junior golf to increase.”

Bermuda will face Mexico and Canada in a four-day match play tournament at Lebovic Golf Club in Aurora.

The event offers a unique opportunity for the island’s young players to represent their country and compete in a Ryder Cup-style format. The format also consists of a medal play component to ensure a balanced and competitive event for all players.

The tournament begins on Friday with a four-ball competition to be followed by Foursomes on Saturday and Singles on Sunday. Skills events will also be held throughout the three days of competition.
