Young mechanic makes her mark at Bermuda Motors
Bermuda’s automotive industry has a new rising star.
Mya Smith, a CedarBridge Academy graduate, joined Bermuda Motors Ltd in July as a vehicle dismantler and parts department assistant. In just a few months, the company said she has impressed colleagues with her determination, passion for mechanics and eagerness to learn.
Ms Smith’s interest in the trade began while still at school, where she and her classmates built a car that was showcased in the Bermuda Day Parade and later competed in the Bermuda Charge. That hands-on experience, she said, fuelled her desire to pursue a career in mechanics. She said she has a vision of one day owning her own garage specialising in repairs and modifications.
“I am really enjoying my time at Bermuda Motors so far, and I’ve been able to gain valuable knowledge and experience,” Ms Smith said. “I’ve applied to two technical institutes in Florida to continue my educational journey in the automotive industry, and I’m currently waiting to hear back. I’m hopeful for an acceptance so I can receive the training I need to keep pursuing this path.”
Since starting at Bermuda Motors, Ms Smith has played a central role in helping the company expand into the second-hand parts market. Every car she dismantles is processed and catalogued, with quality parts added to the firm’s growing inventory.
William Madeiros, managing director of Bermuda Motors, said: “We are delighted to have Mya as part of our team of young Bermudian talent. She embodies the spirit of growth and innovation we value, and we look forward to supporting her journey as she develops into a future leader in the automotive field.”
