Police stop-and-search uncovers machete, drugs

Drugs and a machete were among items seized by police patrolling the roads on Tuesday.

Officers were conducting stop-and-search operations on Middle Road, Southampton, when they stopped a car at about 9.15pm.

They searched the vehicle, which was driven by a 21-year-old man, and discovered a machete in the front passenger seat.

The man was arrested for possession of a bladed article in a public place.

During the arrest, police searched him and found what they suspected was cannabis and drug paraphernalia.

The man was further arrested for offences under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

In a separate incident, police stopped a motorcycle at about 10.15pm while conducting traffic stops along Harbour Road in Paget.

Officers checked the licence of the male rider and discovered that he was not old enough to operate a motorcycle.

Further inquiries revealed that the cycle’s licence had been cancelled and its registration had expired.

Police arrested the boy for driving while disqualified by reason of age.

He was taken to the Hamilton Police Station, where he was processed, detained and subsequently issued moving violation tickets.

In another incident, police responded to a road crash on South Road, St George’s, near the junction with Paynter’s Road at about 11.16pm.

Officers found a man laying next to a motorcycle on a nearby golf course.

The man was treated for his injuries at the scene, which were considered to be minor, before being transported to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

When officers later checked on his condition, they saw that his eyes were glazed and smelled alcohol on his breath. He was arrested for drink driving.

A police spokesman said that all the suspects had been bailed and would appear in court in due time.

He added: “Despite numerous advisories pertaining to stop-and-search operations, individuals continue to risk arrest by carrying knives without lawful excuse while out in public.

“Not to mention, operating unregistered vehicles and not having proper documents for operating a motor vehicle on Bermuda’s roads.

“As previously indicated, the stop-and-search operations are ongoing and we urge you to think carefully about the possible consequences of your actions and not engage in behaviour that could result in your arrest and prosecution.”
