Ensuring your pet’s future: consider adding them to your will

Peace of mind: include your pet in your will, says veterinarian Lucy Richardson (Photograph from Adobe Stock)

Ask any pet owner and they will tell you that they view their pet firmly as a family member. Our animals play such an important role in our lives, as companions, faithful counsel and comedy-moment providers, playing a central role in the family dynamic. Many owners are now considering the importance of planning for their furry friend's future.

One crucial aspect of this planning is including them in wills. This ensures that your pet is taken care of according to your wishes, even if you are no longer able to care for them yourself.

Including your pet in your will provides peace of mind, knowing that they'll be loved and cared for after you are gone.

Without a plan, your pet might end up with an uncertain future or with someone who's not equipped to provide the necessary care.

By designating a caregiver and allocating funds for your pet's care, you can ensure their well-being.

This is applicable to dogs, cats and any companion animal in your care, but it is especially important with longer-living pets such as horses and parrots.

Select a trusted individual who's willing and able to care for your pet.

This person should have experience with animals and be familiar with your pet's needs.

Set aside money for your pet's care, including food, veterinary expenses, and other necessities.

Outline your pet's dietary preferences, medical conditions, exercise routines, and any special requirements.

This helps ensure a smooth transition for your pet.

You can also consider creating a pet trust to manage the funds.

A pet trust is a legal arrangement that allows you to set aside funds for your pet's care and appoint a trustee to manage these funds. It is a valuable tool for ensuring your pet's future.

It can also outline how you want your pet to be cared for, including specific needs and preferences.

The trustee is responsible for ensuring that the funds are used according to your instructions.

Adding your pet to your will allows for peace of mind and knowing that your pet will be cared for, according to your wishes no matter what the circumstances.

It also ensures that your pet is not left without a plan or resources and allows you to make changes to your plan as needed.

Make sure your chosen caregiver is willing and able to take on the responsibility.

Regularly review and update your plan to reflect any changes in your pet's needs or circumstances.

Consult with an estate planning attorney to ensure your plan is legally binding and effective.

By including your pet in your will and considering a pet trust, you can ensure that your furry friend is well cared for, even when you're no longer able to provide for them yourself.

This thoughtful planning provides peace of mind and protects your precious family members’ future.
