IQUW Bermuda, the speciality insurer and reinsurer, has appointed James Mitchell as its new chief underwriting officer as the company continues to expand its footprint in global reinsurance markets.

Mr Mitchell joins from Guy Carpenter, where he served as managing director for global specialities and North American treaty, focusing on client advisory, data-led insights and strategic growth in Bermuda.

He previously spent 13 years at RenaissanceRe in senior underwriting roles in both Bermuda and London, following earlier experience with Catlin Underwriting Agencies Ltd.

As CUO for Bermuda, Mr Mitchell will oversee all reinsurance underwriting operations and help strengthen IQUW’s technical underwriting culture while developing key relationships with clients and brokers.

“James is a significant hire for IQUW Bermuda, and we are delighted to welcome him to the executive team,” said Stephen Young, chief executive of IQUW Bermuda. “His deep expertise in underwriting, portfolio management and digital innovation aligns perfectly with our ambitions to build a cutting-edge reinsurance platform.”

Mr Mitchell said he looked forward to helping build and lead “a high-performing underwriting team in Bermuda”, adding that IQUW’s “data-led underwriting approach and commitment to innovation make it a standout platform in today’s market”.

His appointment follows IQUW Bermuda’s announcement last month of plans to expand its product suite to include mortgage, credit and cyber reinsurance, supported by its strong capital base and A- (Excellent) rating from AM Best.
