First public forum set for Gender Affairs Council
An equality group has invited the community to learn more about its mission and take part in “open discussion about gender equity in Bermuda”.
The Gender Affairs Council, created in January 2023, is holding its first public forum on October 30 at the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation’s training room on Church Street in Hamilton.
The event, titled “Gender (Affairs Council): What is it?”, will run from 6pm to 7.30pm.
Tinée Furbert, the Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, said the council’s formation marked “an important step in our commitment to building a fairer and more inclusive Bermuda”.
Attendees can share their experiences and perspectives to help bring “real progress on gender equity”, and join conversations on issues including gender-based violence, sexual harassment and reproductive rights, mental health and pay equity.
The council’s mandate is to monitor and address issues affecting women and girls, men and boys, and LGBTQ+, gender-diverse and non-binary individuals, with a focus on domestic violence, pay disparity and workplace discrimination.
Its work is guided by legislation and policy, research and evaluation, and community engagement and education.
Attendees can register online in advance, along with sharing their views through an online survey.
