The City of Hamilton is investigating the cause of a partially collapsed wall in Queen Elizabeth Park that was said to have come close to injuring a passer-by.

A woman posted on social media that falling boulders narrowly missed her husband after a car struck a wall in Par-la-Ville car park in Hamilton on Wednesday morning.

She said she was looking to speak to the driver.

She added: “Be careful around the steps into the park from there. My husband was lucky as huge boulders landed all around him.”

The City of Hamilton said it had closed off the area.

A spokeswoman said: “Our initial review indicates that a vehicle reversed into a section of the boundary wall, causing part of the structure to collapse.

“The City of Hamilton is reviewing CCTV footage which has captured the incident.

“As a safety precaution, access to the affected area has been closed off. Water barriers have been placed to restrict entry and the staircase that leads from the car park to the rear of the Bermuda National Library has been cordoned off.

“These closures will remain in place until the area is assessed and made fully safe.”

She said responsibility for repairs would be determined after an investigation.

She added: “At this time, the City of Hamilton has not made direct contact with the individual referenced in the social media post.

“A police report has been submitted and the process of identifying and contacting the driver involved continues.”

A police spokesman said: “Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call the BPS non-emergency reporting number, 211.”
