Residents were thanked by the Ministry of National Security for their attendance at a meeting this week when matters related to gang violence were discussed.

Michael Weeks, the minister, said a strong turnout at Penno’s Wharf in St George’s on Monday reflected community awareness and concern.

He added: “I was pleased to note that the East End town hall meeting was very well attended and I even noticed people there who were not from the East End.

“People came ready to talk, to share their frustrations and to demand better. That tells me the community is paying attention and that is a good thing.

“I was encouraged that many of those who spoke at the town hall focused on offering constructive ideas and solutions.

“That is exactly the kind of dialogue we are hoping for as we continue this important community conversation.”

Attendees at the event on Monday heard from Commissioner of Police Darrin Simons and Andrew Murdoch, the Governor, as well as Mr Weeks.

It was announced that a weapons amnesty beginning next week will be launched in continuing efforts to reduce violent crime on the island.

Mr Weeks said today that the meeting was both productive and eye-opening.

“It reminded us that this problem is bigger than any one neighbourhood,” he added.

“It affects all of Bermuda and it is going to take all of Bermuda to fix it.”

The minister reminded the public that the next town hall — the third in a series — will take place on Monday from 6pm to 8pm at Dalton E. Tucker Primary School, on Middle Road in Southampton.

Members of the public were encouraged to attend, share ideas and contribute to the solution.
