Minister meets Portuguese ambassador to reaffirm ties
Talks were held this week between the island’s economy and labour minister and the Portuguese Ambassador to Britain as an historic partnership was reinforced.
Jason Hayward, while in London, met Nuno Brito with a view to modernising the Portugal-Bermuda Accord.
A government spokesman said: “This engagement reflects a pivotal advancement in reinforcing Bermuda’s historic and strategic partnership with the Republic of Portugal.
“Discussions centred on the modernisation of the accord, signed in 1982, with both parties recognising the enduring significance of this agreement in fostering mutual understanding and co-operation.
“The minister and the ambassador agreed that updating the accord is essential to reflect contemporary realities and shared aspirations for the future.”
He added that during the engagement, which was facilitated by the Government’s London Office, Mr Hayward underscored the historical contributions of the Portuguese community to Bermuda’s social and economic fabric, acknowledging “the vibrant cultural exchange that continues to enrich” both countries.
The spokesman said that Mr Hayward reaffirmed the island’s commitment to human dignity, fair labour practices and the promotion of cultural ties, noting that the principles remain integral to the countries’ shared history.
He added: “The minister and ambassador also explored opportunities for deepened economic co-operation aimed at achieving mutual prosperity.
“Both parties expressed a shared determination to strengthen bilateral engagement and to ensure that the modernised accord serves as a foundation for enhanced collaboration across economic, cultural and social spheres.
“The Government of Bermuda values its enduring partnership with Portugal and looks forward to continued dialogue and co-operation.”
