BermudAir eyes European market

BermudAir has ambitious plans to offer flights to Europe even as it strengthens its foothold in the US travel market.

Adam Scott, the founder and chief executive of the carrier, said the move would involve the procurement of larger aircraft to bolster its fleet.

The objective comes as the airline establishes its “New York triangle” flights, which were said to be generating immense interest from travellers.

Mr Scott told The Royal Gazette: “We have big ambitions.

“Someone quoted us as the little airline that could, and it is true.

“One of our ambitions is to fly east, and so, in order to fly east across the Atlantic, yes, we will need bigger, more capable aircraft.

“At some point we would be able to frame up those plans.”

Mr Scott said that the airline is focused on making sure that its existing network is optimised “as much as possible”.

He added: “We are excited about the New York triangle.

“We are already seeing a great uptake from that, Bermudians as well, especially.”

The route offers travellers a day trip in which they can fly to Newark in the morning and return to the island in the evening via Westchester.

Mr Scott said the company was heartened by the response it received from Bermudians for the proposal.

“That’s going to be our real focus right now,” he added.

As it expands, the airline is preparing to launch service to the Caribbean island of Anguilla from three US destinations between December 17 and 19.

In June, the carrier announced plans for its service to the British Overseas Territory with the launch of AnguillAir, a new brand under its umbrella, which the company said marked its first major expansion beyond Bermuda’s skies.

The flights were initially expected to operate only from Baltimore and Boston to Anguilla but Mr Scott said Newark was added to the list.

He noted: “There is an opportunity for Bermudians to fly to the Caribbean now with just the one stop in the US.

“We have a partner now to provide onward service as well [from Anguilla] to St Bart's, Sint Maarten and other destinations.”

Mr Scott added: “Right now we are really focused on our core markets.

“We are really going to be looking at some of our most successful runs like Toronto and Boston, where we may able to fly more frequently and do the same as we are in New York.”

It was reported last month that Air Canada removed a planned weekly service for the summer of 2026 from its calendar on the Bermuda-Montreal route, for which BermudAir operates a year-round service.

Mr Scott said: “It is rapidly becoming a great success story for us.

“We will continue to grow that particular market, and like all of our markets, we would like to fly to them more frequently eventually.

“Right now twice per week is working well for us.”

The airline launched services to multiple new markets over the past year but it was forced to cut back on other routes, given little demand.

They included Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Hartford, Connecticut.

Mr Scott said that in January the carrier will also cut service to Richmond, Virginia, and Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina.

BermudAir’s routes are governed by numbers, he said, and noted that on occasion things may not go to plan.

Mr Scott added: “Very frankly, we’ve learnt a lot; some things work and some things don’t. And so there is a lot of trial and error because a lot of the decisions that we make are driven by what the numbers and the data tells us.

“The data does not always translate to what human behaviour is.”

On that note, he said the airline had considered Charleston, North Carolina, to be a viable travel option for Bermudians but added: “It didn’t work out that way for us.”

“We are a small airline but we are still learning all the time,” Mr Scott said.

He added: “These have been learning experiences for us.”
