Keitha Caines unleashes fresh game Shoo Bie!
Could you describe former premier Sir John Swan without using his name, or the words “politician”, “premier”, “Bermuda”, “hero” or “united”?
That challenge is one of the many entries in Keitha Caines’s latest card game, Shoo Bie! Bermuda.
The game has been released by her company, Bermuda Trivia. Shoo Bie! comes with a scorecard, bell, pencil and deck of cards with a secret word on each related to Bermuda. Players must describe the word on the card to their team, without saying one of several forbidden words.
If the contestant accidentally says the forbidden word, the opposing team hits a white concierge bell.
“The game causes you to think about things in a deeper way,” Ms Caines said.
The bell is also popular.
Last month, Ms Caines also released a Bermuda-themed colouring book and crossword book. In addition, she tried to launch a trivia deck on Bermuda sport, but there was a glitch.
“The cards are supposed to have questions related to Bermuda sport in different categories,” she said.
However, when the product arrived there was a printing error that replaced the category on each card with the word “events”.
“It was frustrating,” Ms Caines admitted.
Her toddler is now using the misprinted cards to build “apartments”, while Ms Caines and her business partner, Jamel Hardtman, wait to receive the correctly printed version.
Ms Caines started Bermuda Trivia in 2022, while working as director of finance, data and administration at the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation.
“I was also doing a talk show called The Daily Hour, in which we would regularly throw in trivia questions,” she said. “Through that we realised that a lot of people did not know much about Bermuda history and culture.”
Bermuda Trivia was born.
She has since released several trivia decks featuring holidays, Cup Match and Bermuda Black history.
Her advice to other people looking to start a business is don’t quit your day job, at least not right away.
“Start it when you are working your job,” she said. “You will always get to a point where you cannot continue to do both and you have to pick one. I transitioned for six months, working part-time before going out on my own,” she said.
Part of that was becoming a mother. She left full-time work when her daughter was 2 years old.
“She is 3 now,” Ms Caines said. “Running a full-time job, a side job and being a mother was a lot. That was part of the push. At some point, I could not keep going the way I was going.”
Although the trivia decks are hers, she does not get every question right when she plays with others.
“I am not as competitive as my husband,” she said. “I just like spending time with others.”
Many people think they know the answers, but are shocked when they don’t.
For example, many players give the wrong answer when asked who was the first Bermudian to play football professionally.
“They often say Clyde Best or Shaun Goater,” she said. “It was actually Arnold Woollard.”
When she first started Bermuda Trivia she never expected it to grow as large as it has with numerous offerings.
“It was really just the trivia decks,” she said. “Then I thought we can do a second volume, easily. Then I thought we could do a Black history one.”
Some teachers are now using the decks to teach Bermuda culture and history in their classrooms.
People have also commissioned Bermuda Trivia to create special decks for private events.
“My biggest challenge is capacity,” she said. “I tend to want to do many things. I also have accounting clients, but the creative side is what drives me.”
She has learnt to do the things she is good at and find someone else to do the other things.
“I am OK with outsourcing,” she said.
Her products are available at Flying Colours, Brown & Co, Bookmart, Phoenix Stores and People’s Pharmacy.
