Kiwanis share warmth with charities
Two charities on the island have received the gift of warmth this month from a global service organisation.
The Kiwanis Club of Hamilton teamed up with The Berkeley Institute Kiwanis Key Club students and the Kiwanis Club of Hanson Foundation to amass a total of 1,121 pairs of socks for donation to The Salvation Army.
“We ask ourselves, who doesn’t like to receive a new pair or package of socks? Warm feet, warm souls, no holes,” a spokeswoman for the club said.
“These donated socks help the community served by The Salvation Army by giving them a sense of basic dignity. Socks are an item that is used and needed throughout the year — clean socks lead to healthy feet,” she added.
Lionel Swan, the president of the Kiwanis Club of Hamilton, and Patrice Swan, a director and assistant administrator of the organisation, attended a ceremony on December 9 to make the donation.
Captain Dennis Maybury, of The Salvation Army, hailed the gesture — now in its fourth year — as a worthy need.
“It is also a wonderful service and it helps us to support our clients,” he said.
Captain Maybury said the charity donates the socks to clients throughout the year.
He added: “We have found that our clients require essential clothing all year. This is just a wonderful partnership with the Kiwanis.”
At the event, the club also made a donation of home supplies to Teen Services/Teen Haven.
The Kiwanis club donated clothing, accessories, books and educational mats for a reading nook to the organisation.
Its spokeswoman said the gesture aligns with Kiwanis International’s literacy programme.
“The Kiwanis Club of Hamilton has been a supporter of Teen Services/Teen Haven for over 30 years,” the spokeswoman said.
She added: “Over the years, the club has enjoyed a very caring relationship with Teen Haven and adopted them as our Kiwanis Signature Project, as Kiwanis’ motto is ‘Serving the children of the world’.”
