Hospitality workers urged to join RBR recruit camp
Hospitality workers were encouraged to consider part-time service in the Royal Bermuda Regiment as the tourism sector hit its quiet season.
Workers were invited to sharpen their skills during the next block of foundational training between February 8 and 20.
Corporal Joliza Vanderpool, the regimental careers management officer assistant, said the RBR worked well with hospitality jobs as regimental operations slowed down in the summertime while tourism ramped up.
She added: “We have a diverse workforce community in the RBR, members of which are also employed in the hospitality service industry, from commissioned officers to private soldiers.
“Included among our troops are people who, in their primary jobs, are focused on creating positive guest experiences in front-of-house areas to others with roles behind the scenes or in management — several of these jobs are also found in the regiment.”
Corporal Vanderpool said work permit holders could join the RBR on a part-time basis, though primary employers needed to be made aware of any interest in joining.
Roles available within the battalion include administrative personnel, cooks, motor transport and maintenance staff, strategists, medics, mariners, musicians, communications operators, public relations co-ordinators, clerks and regimental police.
Corporal Vanderpool added: “The regiment is for everyone, from people who have basic skills to those already operating at an advanced level.
“Our job is to challenge you and support your transition to becoming a better you, to push you to be the person that you can be.”
She explained that the RBR offered opportunities to travel overseas and receive educational support.
Corporal Vanderpool added that, although recruits volunteered for service, they still received payment for their duties.
Enlistment is open to anyone aged between 18 and 52 and who is a legal resident of Bermuda, upon completion of fitness and background assessments.
Foundational training includes foot drills, infantry training, fieldcraft and weapons handling.
An RBR spokeswoman said that the regiment and hospitality industries shared common traits, including effective communication skills, discipline, integrity and commitment.
She added that those who participated could also develop better confidence, timekeeping and accountability, as well as a stronger sense of responsibility.
The final two assessment days to join the recruit camp in February will take place at Warwick Camp on Saturday at 10am and on Wednesday at 6.30pm.
