Bermudian actress featured with A-listers in thriller film
Viewers of Gus Van Sant’s newest film, Dead Man’s Wire, are likely to spot a glint of Bermudian talent in the film’s opening minutes.
Bermudian actress Jordan Claire Robbins has been featured alongside film industry legends in the new Hollywood movie.
Ms Robbins, who grew up on-island and shares the screen with A-list actors such as Bill Skarsgård, said the period piece was “one of the most fulfilling things I’ve worked on”.
“By the end of things you resonate with him [the main character] and can’t help but ask questions about him, which I think movies should do.”
Ms Robbins added: “I actually saw it during its premiere in Toronto in September.
“That was one of the coolest experiences, to go in there when no one knows you’re there and just seeing people cheer.”
Dead Man’s Wire, which was released worldwide last month, tells the real-life story of Tony Kiritsis, an everyman who takes a mortgage broker hostage after the broker’s company refused to give Kiritsis time to pay off his loans.
The film is named after the device used to take the broker, Richard Hall, hostage — a wire tied around his neck and connected to the trigger of a shotgun, designed to go off in the event of an escape attempt or Kiritsis’s death.
Ms Robbins said she played Doreen, a receptionist at the mortgage firm, who appears in the first few minutes of the film.
She said her role was to introduce Kiritsis, played by Mr Skarsgård, to Mr Hall, which ultimately led to his kidnapping.
Ms Robbins said that although her role was small, she had a blast working alongside the Swedish actor.
She described him as a “very generous” actor who encouraged improvisation.
Ms Robbins said: “I think when you are acting, there are people who know what they want and are not big on improvising, which I get — but having someone like Bill be comfortable with that was very nice.”
She noted that many viewers empathised with his character, finding him charming and sympathetic despite going to extreme lengths.
She said: “It was very clear to me that everyone was rooting for this man, even though he did something that people didn’t like.”
Ms Robbins added: “I think when a movie makes you see someone who does something that you don’t like, but at the same time makes you like them, you did your job as an actor.”
Bill Skarsgård is best known for his work portraying monstrous villains, such as the killer clown Pennywise from the IT franchise and Count Orlok, the aristocratic vampire in the 2024 remake of Nosferatu.
Dacre Montgomery, best known for his work as Billy Hargrove in the hit Netflix series Stranger Things, stars alongside him as Richard Hall.
The film also features veteran actors Al Pacino and Colman Domingo, who Ms Robbins said “stole the show” in his role as Fred Temple in Dead Man’s Wire.
The film has grossed more than $2 million at the box office and has a 91 per cent rating on the review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes.
Ms Robbins made her breakout in the industry as Grace Hargreeves, a robotic reoccurring character in the Netflix show The Umbrella Academy.
She also had roles in episodes of Supernatural and iZombie.
Beyond acting, Ms Robbins has been working behind the scenes as a producer for several projects — including Dead Man’s Wire.
She said: “It’s nice to have projects that have nothing to do with acting.”
