Onias Bascome latest to join Rangers cricket revolution
Southampton Rangers are “rebuilding a dynasty” after bolstering their squad with the acquisition of several key players during cricket’s recent transfer window
Former St George’s Cup Match captain Onias Bascome has joined former national captain Delray Rawlins, Allan Douglas Jr, Deunte Darrell and Alex Dore in joining the Premier Division club.
Darrell and Douglas are back for another stint with Rangers, while Dore has returned after a loan spell at Somerset Cricket Club.
Bascome has teamed up with his father Herbie, the Rangers coach, and siblings Oyinde and Oronde, another former St George’s Cup Match captain who is also now an official club player having been on loan from St David’s last season.
Rangers’s squad also boasts Somerset Cup Match pair Dion Stovell and Dalin Richardson, who serve as chairman of the club’s Cricket and Sports committees.
Club president and former wicketkeeper Darren “Butch” Burchall is delighted to have reinforced the ranks as he attempts to re-establish the club as a powerhouse on the domestic cricket scene.
“We have been prudent with signings and we are not just looking to have everybody join who expressed an interest,” he told The Royal Gazette.
“Our cricket management held meetings and discussed how we wanted to move forward. The important thing is we assemble a group who have already represented Rangers and who are not only interested in playing and winning, but also have an input into our youth programme to help youth director Ryan Belboda with development.
“Herbie Bascome has a robust programme that will bring the best out of all levels of our cricket. We are rebuilding the dynasty.
“We are stacked with experience that will help Ryan develop youth and bring a sense of pride back to the dynasty.”
Also returning to Southampton Oval is former player and coach Clevie Wade, who will serve as assistant coach this time around.
Rangers swept all honours in the First Division last season but were denied a fifth trophy after withdrawing from the Western Counties competition after a dispute with tournament organisers over the venue for the 50 Overs series.
They also fell just shy of a perfect season after losing to Devonshire in the final round of the First Division 50 Overs campaign.
