A Bermudian poet became the first regional guest to take part in Kingston Poetry Week, delivering performances and workshops for students in Jamaica.

Tiara S Webb, founder of Bermuda Voices, was featured on Smile Jamaica, a national talk show, in a discussion on Caribbean storytelling.

She was involved with a three-day academic residency at the Mico University College, delivered in collaboration with Jaiku Poetry Jamaica.

The impact of the residency was recognised in a proclamation from the college, which described the collaboration as “an exhilarating and intellectually enriching experience that reawakened our collective imagination to the profound power of poetry”.

Over the course of the week, Ms Webb connected with more than 100 students and young artists.

She also performed at a live jazz and poetry showcase at the Pegasus Hotel and facilitated a poetry workshop for students of the Manning School of Westmoreland and Kingston Creative.

Ms Webb said: “This experience was an initiation. Not just into performance, but into the responsibility of voice — how it is carried, how it is shared and where it must go next.”

She said that the Bermuda Voices programme now intended to expand into schools across Bermuda, promoting creative writing, storytelling and student voice development.

Schools and organisations interested in hosting workshops, assemblies and extended creative programmes are invited to contact Bermuda Voices at bermudavoices@outlook.com.
