Miles Outerbridge broke the national junior 100 metres record when blitzing his way into the under-20 boys final at the Carifta Games in Grenada on Saturday morning.

Outerbridge turned on the afterburners in heat one, blitzing the field from lane eight to win in a time of 10.29 seconds and break Kyle Webb’s mark of 10.54 set in 2014.

The young Bermudian posted the fastest time during the heats and will attempt to bring home the gold medal in the final, which is scheduled to take place just after 7pm Bermuda time tonight.

Zydon Lightbourne-Furbert was the first Bermudian to book a spot in the finals on Saturday morning by making it through in the under-17 boys 400 metres.

Lightbourne-Furbert finished third in the first of two heats in 49.32sec and made it through to the final with the third-fastest time. He will race for a medal at around 5.20pm this afternoon.

Siblings Elena Bortoli and Gianluca Bortoli will also compete in the 1,500 metres finals tonight

In the morning session, Amara Samuels broke 12 seconds for the first time in the under-17 girls 100 metres, setting a personal best of 11.97. Samuels ran a huge race to finish fourth in the second heat, which was good enough to finish eleventh of the 27 runners overall.

The other athletes competing on Saturday morning included Kelise Wade, who ran 59.08 in the girls under-17 400 metres. She finished sixth in her heat and sixteenth overall.

Arima Turner ran 12.73 in the under-20 girls 200 metres to finish seventh in her heat and seventeenth overall.

Tatiana Sousa, who won a javelin silver medal in the under-17 age group last year, finished sixth as one of the youngest throwers in the under-20 age division this year
