Wells confident of regaining fitness for Wembley final
Nahki Wells is confident of being available for Luton Town’s EFL Trophy final against Stockport County at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.
The Bermuda striker went off early in the first half in the Hatters convincing 3-0 win away to Wimbledon on Monday after experiencing discomfort in his groin but expects to be declared fit for the final showdown.
“I’m confident of being fit,” Wells told The Royal Gazette. “I’ll be given a go on Friday with the intention of being fit.”
The 35-year-old retained his spot in Jack Wilshere’s starting XI for Monday’s Sky Bet League One clash against the Dons from the one that edged Peterborough United 2-1 three days earlier but had his afternoon at Cherry Red Records Stadium cut short after his groin issue flared up in the seventeenth minute.
“I felt my groin so I couldn’t continue,” he said.
Wells was making only his second appearance for the Hatters since returning from a hamstring injury in their 2-1 home win against Peterborough United at Kenilworth Road on Good Friday.
Luton were originally knocked out of the competition by League Two side Swindon Town. However, Swindon were thrown out of the competition after an investigation revealed that they had fielded two ineligible players in the Vertu Trophy Round of 16 tie on January 13 with Luton being reinstated by EFL Trophy organisers.
Swindon captain Ollie Clarke started the match while he was already serving a suspension and Aaron Drinan was used as a substitute despite not appearing on the team-sheet.
The Hatters are now hoping to again make the most of a second opportunity in the competition and pick up some silverware against league rivals Stockport at Wembley, where Wells has already made two appearances at the iconic stadium with Bradford in the Capital One Cup Final and League Two Play-off Final and another with Huddersfield Town in the League One Play-off Final.
He also scored against Northampton in Bradford’s 3-0 triumph in the 2013 League Two Play-off Final to become the first Bermudian to do so at the new Wembley Stadium.
That feat arrived just shy of three months after becoming the first Bermudian to play at the London venue in the Bantams’ 5-0 defeat to then Premier League opponents Swansea City in the Capital One Cup Final.
Wells was also a member of Carlisle United’s squad that reached the EFL Trophy Final in 2011 but was left out of the matchday squad.
