Cardiff City goalkeeper Nathan Trott remains confident the Bluebirds can secure promotion to the Sky Bet Championship despite team’s poor run of form.

Brian Barry-Murphy’s team have won just two of their last eight games, but Trott is adamant that the club are still in a strong position to make an immediate return to the Championship after being relegated to the Sky Bet League One for the first time since 2003 last season, just six years after playing in the Premier League.

“Over the course of the season there have been so many ups and downs but ultimately when you look at the position we’re in and how we’re playing when you watch the full games, everyone should feel really positive about the way we’re going and with one win the mood changes again,” Trott said.

The Bluebirds trail runaway Sky Bet League One leaders Lincoln City, who clinched promotion to the Championship for the first time in 65 years with five games to spare courtesy of a 2-1 win at Reading on Monday.

Trott and his fellow team-mates lost more ground in the League One title race after being held to a 1-1 draw away to Peterborough United last time out.

Reflecting on his team’s performance, the 26-year-old said: “I know how good we are and how good we’ve been all season, so to leave with a point was a bit frustrating but going away and getting a point is not the worst situation ever.

“I think we can push on from there and continue to play how we have, taking our chances.

“It’s a credit to us and how good we’ve been this season that the last few results haven’t been the best but ultimately, we’re still in a very strong position to get promoted.

“For our standards we could have been a little bit more critical of ourselves, but overall I think that the way this season has been it’s been really positive.

“The main thing is to keep the focus on ourselves. That’s what we’ve been doing since the first week of the season, so why change now?”

The Bluebirds are now hoping to get back to winning ways when they host fourth place Bolton Wanderers at Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday.

Second placed Cardiff are eight points above Bolton, who sit fourth, and seven clear of third placed Bradford City, and also have one game in hand over both teams.

Trott believes a win for the Bluebirds on Saturday could have a significant bearing on their hopes of clinching the remaining automatic promotion spot on offer.

“It’s one of those six-point games where they’re behind us,” he said. “I think to win at home would be really special for the fans and at this stage of the season would be a really big win.

“That’s what we’re fully focused on right now. I think that the fans are always going to show their emotions a lot more than the players.

“Over the course of the season there have been so many ups and downs but ultimately when you look at the position we’re in and how we’re playing when you watch the full games, everyone should feel really positive about the way we’re going, and with one win the mood changes again.

“It’s been positive for me since I’ve come in. It’s been a fun team to play with and be a part of, so I just want to continue that, complete the mission and get this club where it belongs.”

Trott has been in sparkling form throughout the campaign since joining Cardiff on a season-long loan from Superliga champions FC Copenhagen last August.

It is understood that his deal includes an option to buy should the Bluebirds achieve promotion back to the Championship this season.
