Arman Newton picked up his first piece of silverware of the year after victory in the Talcott Cedarberry Bowl title at Belmont Hills Golf Club on Sunday.

The Saltus Grammar School student won the 16-18 boys title by a comfortable eight shots after finishing the 54-hole tournament at 10 over to deny two-times defending champion Oliver Betschart a hat-trick of victories in his final year of eligibility.

Johnny Bart, who like Newton has also come on in leaps and bounds lately, finished runner-up at 18 over followed by Betschart a farther three shots back.

Two-times girls champion Darina Betschart retained her crown as the only female competitor in the 14-15 division after finishing second overall at 39 over, six shots behind division winner Antonio Fortuna, of Canada, who signed off at 33 over. Charlie Hopkin finished third after being pipped by Betschart for second on retrogression.

Lewis MacFarlane (+20) won the 12-13 age group by a whopping 35 shots at 20 over, with Austin Frank (+55) and Hugo Adams (+63) taking second and third respectively.

The fast-improving Bradford Laing (+37) won the under-12 title by an equally resounding 23 shots, with Jack Jones (+60) pipping Joshua Cann (+60) for second on retrogression.

Michael Hinwood won the under-11 novice title with 53 Stableford Points, with Cyril Jones (49) and Zy’nico Wales finishing second and third.

Juliana Gakundi walked away with the novice girls title with 47 Stableford Points followed by Poppy Parry (36) in second and Zara Soutter (31) in third.

Laing, Cillian McGlynn, Oliver Betschart and Adams won the longest drive award in their respective divisions while Wales walked away with the closest to the pin award.

Tournament director Patrick Graham hailed the event, which was also hosted by Mid Ocean Golf Club and Five Forts Golf Club, as a huge success and thanked all those involved.

“We had 62 players which is the biggest junior tournament in a long time here so it shows the growth of junior golf here on island,” he told The Royal Gazette.

“We had Talcott Financial Group who were title sponsors this year and it’s great to have their support in helping with the costs of running a tournament.

“They did really well and Butterfield Group also contributing to junior golf with regards to prizes and other donations which is great.

“BGA and Dunkley’s donated some snacks and food so I’d like to recognise them as well and obviously the Bermuda Golf Association side of things with Darrin Lewis [general secretary] doing a great job doing all of his administrative work in making sure the tournament runs as smoothly as possible.

“Happy to also thank all of the parents, volunteers and junior golfers for participating and I look forward to next year and making it even bigger and better.”
