The public was invited to a free foot screening tomorrow to help diabetics detect early complications and receive proper care.

Matthew Francis, the founder of Atlantic Podiatry, will offer attendees a ten-minute one-on-one consultation that includes a professional foot assessment and a chance to ask questions.

Lori Rockhead, the executive director of the Bermuda Diabetes Association, which is working alongside Atlantic Podiatry for this event, said foot health was a “vital yet often underestimated part of diabetes care”.

She added that tackling the problem early on through preventive measures and screenings helped people take control of their health.

Ms Rockhead said: “This initiative is about empowerment as much as prevention, giving individuals the knowledge and confidence to take control of their wellbeing.

“By encouraging early awareness and regular checks, we are helping to shift foot health from something reactive to something proactive and routine in everyday diabetes care.”

Diabetes foot screenings test sensation and blood circulation, as well as overall foot health.

Participants will be asked about their foot care routines and any symptoms they may be experiencing, and get a risk assessment categorised as low, moderate, or high, along with guidance on proper foot care and recommendations for any necessary follow-ups.

Dr Francis explained: “Diabetes can affect circulation and nerve function in the feet, meaning people may not always feel small injuries such as cuts, blisters or pressure spots.

“Regular screenings give clinicians the opportunity to pick up on these early warning signs, assess risk factors and intervene quickly when needed.”

Those living with diabetes, both type 1 and type 2, are encouraged to undergo foot screenings at least once a year, even without the presence of symptoms.

Appointments are available between 9am and 3pm at the Bermuda Diabetes Association on Princess Street in Hamilton.

Participants can register on the Bermuda Diabetes Association’s website, while those interested in attending future foot screenings should e-mail media@diabetes.bm.
