Banned driver loses motorcycle in tree

A man who crashed his bike and launched it into a tree was banned from the roads for ten months after he admitted driving while disqualified.

Scott Bean, 25, also pleaded guilty to speeding at 61km/h in a separate incident when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court.

Police were travelling along South Road in Paget when they witnessed the crash scene near Tribe Road No 4B, the court heard.

They found Bean laying in a ditch near the westbound lane and his motorcycle hanging upside down from a tree.

Bystanders told the officers they had seen Bean overtaking cars before he made a U-turn, tried to negotiate a right bend and lost control of his bike.

He was taken to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Police discovered that Bean had been disqualified for driving for 18 months at the time of the incident in the early hours of January 26 last year.

Magistrate Craig Attridge heard that Bean, from Pembroke, was initially supposed to appear in court in February 2025 to answer for the charge but never showed up.

He also heard that Bean had been due in court in January that same year for the speeding offence but had failed to appear.

The defendant told the court he was in hospital overseas at about that time.

Mr Attridge fined him $750 for disqualified driving and $320 for the speeding offence.

He also issued 13 demerit points — seven for disqualified driving and six for speeding — on Bean’s licence.

After hearing he had six previous demerit points on his licence, bringing Bean’s total to 20 demerit points, Mr Attridge banned him from the roads for ten months for passing the 12-point limit.
