Government warning on rats, mosquitoes

Residents have been warned to beware of rats and mosquitoes as the island heads into summer, creating conditions for both pests to multiply.

Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health, said the vector control team had seen increased reports of rodent activity in recent weeks.

She added: “Rodent control is not only about comfort. It is about protecting our homes, our neighbourhoods and our health. One of the most effective steps residents can take is to ensure they are using proper trash bins with tightfitting lids.

“When waste is unsecured, it becomes a food source that attracts rodents and encourages them to settle in our neighbourhoods. Every resident can make a meaningful difference by keeping their surroundings clean and removing the conditions that allow rodents to breed.”

She also highlighted the importance of mosquito prevention as the island enters the period when the insects’ breeding, which requires only a small amount of standing water, increases sharply.

“By regularly checking your property and emptying containers, clearing gutters and refreshing outdoor water sources, you help protect your household and your neighbours.”

Vector control and environmental health teams continue to conduct year round surveillance, ovitrapping and property inspections. Bait boxes for rodent control are available to the public at a modest cost while servicing is provided at no charge.

Residents can contact vector control at 246-7766 and e-mail vectorcontrol@gov.bm for guidance or to request an inspection
