The mother of a murder accused recounted his arrest at their Palmetto Road home following the death of a young father in March 2011.

Ariel Anternette Cole told the Supreme Court that the police also searched her home following the arrest of Devon Hewey, who is accused of murdering 22-year-old Randy Robinson and using a firearm to commit an indictable offence.

The jury heard that at about 6pm on March 31, 2011, Ms Cole was at home talking to a friend when her son left the house.

Ms Cole — who testified virtually — said that evening, she received a call from Mr Hewey who asked her to let the dog out because “it was getting dark”.

At about 9pm, she said her son returned home in the company of his friend Jay Dill — who would “crash” at her house occasionally — and the two went to Mr Hewey’s room.

The two men entered the home with “black helmets” in their hands, the witness recalled.

She said the police visited the family’s home later that night.

Upon their arrival, Mr Hewey, Mr Dill and her other son went to to the upper flat of the home.

The witness said the officers “were there for a while” at her home, and searched the lower and parts of the upper flat of the house.

Mr Hewey and Mr Dill were subsequently placed under arrest.

The jury also heard from Detective Inspector Rohan Henry, who described visiting Ms Cole’s residence on April 3, 2011, in the company of another officer to conduct a search.

The two seized a jacket, which was tagged as evidence at the Serious Crimes Unit of the Bermuda Police Service.

Jurors heard earlier about activities involving four phone numbers between March 31, 2011 — the day Mr Robinson was fatally shot in Devonshire — and April 1 of that year.

The court also heard testimony from Detective Constable Warren Bundy, of the Serious Crime Unit, who recalled a search conducted at the defendant’s residence at 7 Palmetto Road in April 2011.

Items seized during the search, which Mr Bundy said incorporated Mr Hewey’s bedroom, included a bulletproof vest, jewellery, mobile phones and a motorcycle key.

Jurors also heard from Detective Constable O’Neil Swaby, who served as notes officer for the search.

The trial, before Puisne Judge Alan Richards, continues.
