Police testify during 2011 murder trial
A police officer recalled seizing several items from a Devonshire residence after a young father was murdered 15 years ago.
Detective Constable Warren Bundy, of the Serious Crime Unit, told jurors during the trial of Devon Hewey that officers executed a search warrant at 7 Palmetto Road in April 2011.
Mr Hewey has denied murdering 22-year-old Randy Robinson on March 31, 2011, and using a firearm to commit an indictable offence.
Items seized during the search, which Mr Bundy said incorporated Mr Hewey’s bedroom, included a bulletproof vest, jewellery, mobile phones and a motorcycle key.
Jurors earlier heard from Detective Constable O’Neil Swaby, who served as notes officer for the search.
Mr Bundy said he wore gloves throughout the search for “health reasons” and to prevent evidence from being contaminated.
Sergeant Brian MacNab told the Supreme Court yesterday that he and other officers were instructed to clear the same property of people the night Mr Robinson was killed along Border Lane North.
Mr Hewey, representing himself, highlighted how Mr MacNab provided a statement about his role in the investigation in February 2013, two years after the fatal shooting.
Demarlo Curtis, who knew Mr Robinson since high school, said in a written statement that he last saw the victim, whom he referred to as Randy Spence Jr, the day before he died and that he “did not have any enemies”.
Mr Curtis wrote that he called Mr Robinson before learning of his death and got nervous when he did not answer.
The trial, before Puisne Judge Alan Richards, continues.
