Sport is the name of the game in a call to artists to design a mural at the Flora Duffy Stadium.

The Bermuda National Gallery is seeking proposals by June 15 for an installation at the National Sports Centre.

This will be the fifth mural created as part of Run for the Arts — a 5km run through North East Hamilton.

Established three years ago, the collaboration between the gallery and artist Nhuri Bashir supports public art in the area and raises funds for the gallery’s education initiatives.

Jennifer Phillips, the executive director of BNG, said: “Since 2023, Run for the Arts has not only supported local artists through the funding of four murals, it has also financed various art education programmes including paid internships and educational programming at BNG.

“As a registered charity, we are incredibly grateful to our community partners, without whom this would not be possible.

“We are thankful to Ariel Re for their generous sponsorship of this year’s mural and to the Bermuda National Sports Centre for donating the wall that will serve as the canvas for this exciting public art project.”

Artists can apply as individuals or in collaboration, and are asked to honour the location of the mural by integrating a sports theme into their design.

Mr Bashir said: “This year’s Run for the Arts mural project really continues what the event has always been about for us, using public art to create something lasting within the North East Hamilton community.

“The sports theme is a natural fit for the stadium location. Sports and art both have a way of bringing people together, inspiring younger generations and creating pride around a space, so we want the mural to reflect that energy and sense of community.

“One of the best parts of the project so far has been seeing previous murals become part of the identity of the neighbourhoods they’re in.

“Spaces that people once passed by now feel more alive, more memorable and more connected to the community around them. We are creating an open air gallery for all to enjoy.”

Veronica King, property underwriter and chairwoman of the Ariel Re Charity Committee, added: “We are proud to sponsor this year’s mural and support Bermuda’s talented local artists, helping to create a lasting piece of public art that will be enjoyed by residents and visitors for years to come.

“As Ariel Re celebrates 20 years in Bermuda, we believe this mural is a fitting way to recognise and commemorate our longstanding commitment to Bermuda and its community.

“We are proud to support a project that will leave a lasting legacy and be enjoyed by the community for many years to come.”

Artists are invited to submit a proposal for a mural design at www.bng.bm/run-for-the-arts/murals.

Applications are open to Bermudians over the age of 18, residing in Bermuda or overseas.

Funding will be provided to support the cost of materials and execution of the concept, and submissions are due by June 15.
