A driver escaped injury yesterday when a public bus crashed into a wall at the Mid Ocean Club in St George’s.

The incident happened at about 2.30pm when the vehicle was going through a training exercise for a driver.

A government spokeswoman said no passengers were on board and the Department of Public Transportation’s bus sustained minor damage but remained drivable after the incident.

“The vehicle was subsequently recovered, and the department is assessing the damage as part of its standard review process,” the spokeswoman said.

She said the department was aware of the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A spokesman at the golf club in Tucker’s Town said that at about 2.30pm yesterday, an employee was attending to rooms at the property when he heard a “loud bang”.

He said staff responded at the scene and made sure that the driver and her instructor were safe.

“She was all right and the instructor as well … maybe she went a bit too much on the gas,” the spokesman said.

He said the bus struck down a palm tree and ended up perched above the wall.

A tow truck was summoned to the scene but the task of removal required the services of a crane, which eventually hoisted the bus off the wall about two hours later.

“We were happy that no one was hurt,” the golf club’s spokesman said.
