Powerboat crash leaves one dead, one injured
A powerboat pilot died this afternoon after a crash with a moored vessel in Hamilton Harbour, police have confirmed.
The incident happened at about 3.45pm, when emergency crews responded to 911 calls about a marine incident in the area of the Lower Ferry site in Paget.
Officers from the Bermuda Police Service were joined by emergency medical service and Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service crews.
“Upon arrival, it was ascertained that a powerboat was being operated in Hamilton Harbour when the pilot lost control of the boat and [crashed] into a stationary, unoccupied, boat at its mooring,” the BPS said.
“The powerboat pilot sustained a life-threatening head injury and was left unresponsive.
“He was attended to at the scene by EMTs, but was subsequently pronounced dead by an on-call medical doctor.”
The BPS added that the co-pilot suffered a head wound.
“He was also attended to at the scene by EMTs before he was transferred by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, where, at last check, he continued to receive treatment for his injury,” they added.
The BPS said they were aware that a video clip of the incident was circulating on social media and asked people to “be considerate of the family of the deceased”.
Anyone who receives the clip was asked to not share it and delete it from their device.
Police also asked anyone with information about the crash or who witnessed the incident to call the main police number, 295-0011.
The incident took place during the Bermuda Power Boat Association’s annual race in the harbour.
The race coincided with the eighth annual Scooter Mart Motor Fest, which took place along Front Street in Hamilton.
Traffic was earlier diverted on Harbour Road while emergency crews assisted from landside.
The Royal Gazette contacted the Bermuda Power Boat Association, who declined to offer a comment at this time.
