Organisers hailed the Chartered Professional Accountants of Bermuda’s inaugural Accounting Career Fair on Wednesday as “a great success”, with approximately 70 attendees who learnt about opportunities within the accounting profession.

The event brought together employers and industry professionals to showcase the many pathways into accounting, including internships, scholarships, student programmes, placements, and graduate career opportunities.

Attendees also heard from a panel which showcased the journey of becoming an accountant. The panel featured Craig Bridgewater, FCPA, an experienced professional; Kalmar Richards, parent of a CPA; Rickie Williams, CPA, a recent CPA graduate; and Vivien Carter, a funding provider of Bermuda Centennial Foundation.

A highlight of the evening was a fireside chat between Antoine Jackson and Jozelle Opoku, the CPA Bermuda president and chief executive officer, which explored Mr Jackson’s journey into becoming an accountant from starting at Bermuda College and then going overseas to finish his education, then ultimately leading to obtaining his Canadian CPA designation.

The event also featured CPA Bermuda's Outstanding Student Awards ceremony, recognising exceptional final-year high school and Bermuda College students for their academic achievement and commitment to pursuing careers in accounting and business.

The award winners were: Callum Adams (Mount Saint Agnes Academy), Lily Butler (Bermuda High School), Shakirah DeGuzman (The Berkeley Institute), Hudson Ferris (Warwick Academy), Kiara-Ma'Lie Sana Ronel Weeks-George (Somersfield Academy), Evie Hook (Saltus Grammar School), Kyrah Mendes (Bermuda College), Dasia-Nae Scott (CedarBridge Academy) and Ciaran Smyth (Bermuda Institute).

Jason Hayward, the Minister of Economy and Labour, gave opening remarks at the career fair.

“Accounting is far more than numbers; it is the language of business,” Mr Hayward said. “It equips professionals with the skills to solve complex problems, make informed decisions, and help organisations grow and succeed.”

Minister Hayward highlighted how advances in artificial intelligence, data analytics, digital reporting, and automation are transforming the accounting profession, increasing demand for professionals who can think critically, exercise sound judgment, communicate effectively, and provide strategic advice.

Encouraging students and aspiring accountants to approach the career fair with curiosity, confidence, and ambition, the Minister noted that every conversation could lead to an internship, mentorship, professional qualification, or rewarding career.
