Betschart endures tough finale at Junior World Championships
Oliver Betschart endured a tough day in the final round of the Junior World Golf Championships at the iconic Torrey Pines Golf Course in California on Thursday.
Competing in the boys 15-18 division, the top local amateur shot 79 to finish the 54-hole stroke play tournament at 12-over 228.
Betschart, who was last shown tied for 79th in the 201-strong field with a host of players yet to complete their rounds, was one over through the opening nine holes after carding a birdie and two bogeys.
However, the promising golfer lost considerable ground on the back nine where he dropped six shots after carding two bogeys and two doubles at the par-4 14th and par-5 18th holes.
His finest moment at the event arrived in the second round when he shot an even-par 72, which included three birdies.
This week’s international tournament was Betschart’s third in as many weeks having competed in both the North & South Men’s Amateur Championship and North & South Junior Amateur Championships at the world-famous Pinehurst Golf Course in North Carolina.
He missed the 36-hole cut at the North & South Men’s Amateur Championship, consisting of stroke play and match play, and finished tied for 45th in the 90-strong boys division of the junior amateur championship.
Betschart’s sister, Darina, also competed at the prestigious North & South Junior Amateur Championship, overcoming a tough start to finish tied for 72nd at 29-over 245 in the 90-strong girls division.
