Donna Raynor taking care of Bermuda at Commonwealth Games
Donna Raynor is gearing up to perform her duties as chef de mission of the Bermuda team at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Raynor performed the same role at the last edition of the Games in Birmingham, England, four years ago. It will be the fourth time that she executes the task, having also done it twice at the Central American and Caribbean Games.
“The interesting thing is the team that I have is close to the same team I had in Birmingham,” Raynor told The Royal Gazette.
“It’s only six new athletes that's added; these are Elijah and Elan Daley, Sam Williamson, Norre Robinson, Nirobi Smith-Mills and Jessica Lewis.
“I’m excited to see that these guys are still competing and to see their progress. It’s unfortunate we don’t have triathlon or road cycling, but the organisers are doing the best that they can to at least host the games.”
The former president of the Bermuda National Athletics Association is ensuring that the 13 athletes have nothing to worry about throughout their stay in Glasgow.
“My job is to make sure that the athletes are comfortable and that they have everything they need,” she said.
“That’s pretty much my focus, to make sure that the athletes know all the information that they need to know that they don't have to run around and try to figure out.
“We’re having a team meeting on Thursday morning. Elan and Elijah live in Canada, so it’s a chance for them to meet the rest of the team, which makes it easy for them to support each other.”
At the last Commonwealth Games, the Bermuda delegation wore the customary pink shorts for the opening ceremony.Today, they will be in different attire inspired by the Talbot Brothers.
“They’re used to us walking in with Bermuda shorts,” Raynor said.
“I was like, no, let’s do something different this time. We’re going to be wearing outfits reflecting the Talbot brothers, with the Calypso type of shirts, pants and the hat.”
From the 17 athletes that went to Birmingham, Bermuda bagged two medals, a gold secured by Dame Flora Duffy in the individual triathlon and bronze by Jah-Nhai Perinchief in the triple jump.
“I’m not putting any of the athletes under pressure,” Raynor added.
“I think all of the athletes are going to compete well. They all seem pretty excited, they’re ready to go, hopefully, we get a bunch of surprises.
“I’ve had conversations with the swimmers, they all seem like they’re raring and ready to go. Emma Harvey, Jack Harvey Elijah Daley, Elan Daley and Sam Williamson, they’ve all had some pretty good results this year.
“I’m excited to see them competing, starting on Friday. They’ve said they feel confident, they’re excited to get in the pool and I think they’ll be pleased with their results.
“Tiara DeRosa broke the national record again so I think she’ll do well. Hopefully, Jah-Nhai Perinchief will have a great competition, because he did win the bronze medal at the last Commonwealth.
“Sakari Famous just had a good competition where she won her first pro meet, hopefully, she’ll be at her best.
“I’m excited to see Conor White doing track cycling because this will really be different. As you know, he’s a road cyclist, so I’m excited to see how he makes out.
“We’ve also added Jessica Lewis for para athletics. I know she’s competing well, so I’m looking forward to seeing her compete as well.”
