Bermuda breaks new ground with squad at Commonwealth Games

Jessica Lewis will compete for Bermuda in para athletics

Bermuda will be represented in para athletics for the first time at the Commonwealth Games, with Jessica Lewis set to compete in the 400 metres.

Lewis, one of 13 athletes travelling to Glasgow for the first time, is not the only trailblazer among the team, with Conor White becoming the first representative in track cycling.

Bermuda’s squad will compete in three sports with five swimmers among the team. Chef de mission Donna Raynor is looking forward to the event, which takes place between July 24 and August 2.

“These Games represent a proud and historic moment for Bermuda,” Raynor said.

“Alongside our strong and experienced athletics and swimming squads, we are especially proud to see Jessica and Conor break new ground for our country in para athletics and track cycling. This team reflects the depth and growing diversity of sport in Bermuda and we look forward to supporting every athlete as they represent our island on the world stage in Glasgow.”

Peter Dunne, president of Bermuda Olympic Association, has expressed his pride in the team.

“Preparation for these Games has been months in the making and I could not be prouder of the commitment Bermuda’s athletes have shown,” Dunne said.

“Every athlete travelling to Glasgow has earned their place and they will have the full support of our coaches, officials and the entire Bermuda community behind them. They are ready to compete and to make Bermuda proud.”
