The Bermuda rugby sevens team tasted some success on the final day of their tournament at the Central American and Caribbean Games on Monday.

Playing for positions between fifth and eighth, Bermuda beat Guatemala 26-12 to progress to the fifth and sixth-place play-off.

Two tries from Kelin Williams and one each from Jahniko Francis and Aiden Kendall combined with three conversions from four attempts by captain Hadleigh Tucker to give Bermuda an easy victory.

In their final game against Barbados to determine who would finish fifth, Bermuda were narrowly beaten 24-19.

Two tries from Tucker and one from Williams was not enough to claw back a 17-7 half-time deficit.

Bermuda’s bowlers began their busy campaign in Santo Domingo in the men’s singles tournament

The squad was split into morning and evening sessions with LeVinc Samuels, Dennis Joell, Shannon Lee and Anthony Hayward taking to the lanes first, with David Maycock and Lemar Richardson, who carried the Bermuda flag at the opening ceremony, taking part in the afternoon session.

Samuels did best of those starting early, scoring 1,263 points and finishing twentieth of the 36 bowlers taking part in the morning session. Joell ended with 1,178 points in 31st with Hayward 32nd on 1,160 and Lee 36th on 1,090.

Maycock finished fifth in the afternoon session and ninth overall on 1,360 points. Lamar Richardson finished 24th in the afternoon on 1,011 points

In the beach volleyball competition, Benjamin Barnett and Connor Somerville are still searching for their first win despite putting in an improved performance in defeat to Cayman Islands.

Barnett and Somerville lost 18-21, 14-21 and have one game left in the group stages.

But there was good news for the women’s team of Megan Hands and Natalie Gazzard, who got their first win on the board by beating the Jamaican duo of Jillian Johnson and Kristina Miller 21-10, 21-15.

Victory leaves the Bermuda duo second in Group D on four points from three games played.
