Yes, you can work one hour for yourself
I read a quote recently that challenged me, and honestly, I needed to hear it. It said: “You’ll work eight hours a day building someone else’s dream, but won’t spend one hour building your own.” As a personal trainer, I thought: “Wow … that one hit close to home.”
People often assume that because I’m a personal trainer, I have no problem fitting in my own workouts. The reality is quite different. I spend most of my day training clients. Yes, I’m moving, setting up equipment, demonstrating exercises, and sometimes even taking my own evening classes, but that’s not the same as having my own dedicated workout.
My attention is always on everyone else: checking technique, correcting form, keeping people motivated, and making sure everyone exercises safely. By the time my day is over, it’s easy to convince myself that I’ve done enough, when in reality, I haven’t poured into myself the way I’ve poured into everyone else.
Sound familiar? Maybe your job isn’t fitness. Maybe you’re behind a desk, on your feet all day, driving, teaching, or caring for others. Whatever you do, it’s easy to spend your entire day giving your time and energy to everyone else, only to get home and feel like there’s nothing left for you.
The problem is that our health is usually the first thing we sacrifice and the last thing we make time for.
Exercise isn’t just about losing weight or looking better. It’s an investment in your future. Every workout makes you stronger, improves your health, boosts your energy, reduces stress, and helps you stay active and independent as you age.
I always tell my clients that you don’t have to be perfect, you just have to be consistent. If you can set aside one hour three or four times a week, that’s fantastic. If an hour feels like too much, start with 20 or 30 minutes. The goal isn’t to have the perfect workout. The goal is simply to keep showing up.
So here’s my challenge to you: Start showing up for yourself with that same commitment. Don’t wait until Monday. Don’t wait until next month. Don’t wait until life slows down, because it probably won’t. Just start. Schedule your workout, lace up your shoes, and take that first step.
Because if you can work eight hours for someone else, you can work out one hour for yourself. The best investment you’ll ever make is in your own health.
