Fish and corals have been returned to the North Rock tank at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo as restoration works take shape.

The construction hoarding at the exhibit has been taken down and visitors can catch a glimpse of the tank coming back to life.

However, it will take time for the attraction to be completed and officially open.

“We so appreciate everyone's patience and understanding over the past several months as we worked to update the North Rock exhibit and ensure a safe home for our sealife for many years to come,” a spokeswoman said.

Major renovation works at the site included the restoration of the tank, which was completely resealed at the panel edges and reset for the first time in its almost 30-year history.

In November, the Ministry of Public Works and Environment said that the North Rock exhibit was undergoing major restoration to ensure its long-term safety and integrity.

The works included draining 140,000 gallons of seawater, the transportation of 213 sea creatures — including three live sharks in a crane — and the dislodging of massive six-inch thick acrylic panels.

Restoration of the North Rock tank started ahead of a larger infrastructure project at the facility.

In June, the Bermuda Zoological Society unveiled the Aquarium 100 Campaign — a public-private partnership — which involves a partnership between the BZS, the Government and the private sector to build on the BAMZ legacy, with a commitment to the island’s students at its core.

Ian Walker, the principal curator at the BAMZ, said the campaign was unveiled to coincide with the institution’s 100th anniversary and the 50th anniversary of the BZS, celebrated over a two-year window between now and 2028.
