The trial of a Canadian woman accused of a plot to smuggle drugs into the island ended abruptly yesterday with Puisne Judge Juan Wolffe discharging the jury.

Sandra Marrero-Guzman, 37, had denied allegations that she conspired with others to import cannabis and that she possessed cannabis with intent to supply on June 20 last year.

Her trial began in the Supreme Court last week and was expected to continue yesterday. However, Mr Justice Wolffe said that after discussions with counsel it was agreed that jurors in the case should be discharged, thanking them for their time.

He ordered that the matter be mentioned in the Supreme Court on August 24 with the intention of setting a new trial date.

Ms Marrero-Guzman was remanded in custody until that date.
