Boxer Adrian Roach says he is ready to announce himself on the United States scene when he clashes with American Brandon Mendez in Greensboro, North Carolina, today (8.30pm Bermuda time).

Roach (2-0), takes on Mendez, who is making his pro debut, in a four-round welterweight contest at Frank & Florence Williams Event Centre.

“We’re ready to put on a show and make our presence felt on US soil,” Roach told The Royal Gazette.

“It sounds like another big moment is coming. I feel like people out there are going to really like my fighting style, I can start to build a fanbase overseas.”

The Bermudian, who has had two fights called off this year in North Carolina and Texas, did not let that deter him as he remained in shape.

“I’ve had two cancellations, so I’ve just been geared up all year and ready to get it on,” he said.

“For whatever reason, God decided that it wasn’t the time for me, so I’m just trusting the process. We trained extremely hard for this one, same as the others and we’re ready.

“We really never got out of the last training camp from the last one. For this specific fight, we’ve been training for about two months.

“It’s nothing really bad I could ever ask for this training camp, we had a really good sparring.”

Roach had Devin Carter withdraw from their fight in March. Three months later, Jerrell Mayweather grew cold feet and pulled out of the contest with the Bermudian.

In an effort to guard himself against opponents pulling out, Roach and his team have ensured that the contracts signed have no room for last-minute disappearance.

“I’ve been eager to get into the ring this year,” the 24-year-old said.

“For whatever reason, my previous two fights have been cancelled. People have pulled out at the last minute and left us no real options to find replacements.

“But this time, we have set in place in the contract to prevent last-minute pull-outs. There are stipulations to prevent a last-minute withdrawal with the exception of medical reasons.”

Despite facing the more experienced Roach, Mendez came out swinging with confidence in an interview with The Wilson Times.

“Well, my plan is to go in there and win,” the 23-year-old said.

“I feel it inside of me that I’m going to destroy this guy and right now I feel no one can stop me. My mind is on right and I feel like no one can touch me right now.

“I feel so much confidence in myself and in my fighting ability that I don’t think that this fight will last too long, because I’ll put him out probably in the first or second round.”

Roach thanked his sponsors for making it possible for him to continue fighting. He also urged Bermudians to tune into the channel that will be streaming his fight.
