The St David’s Island Historical Society is seeking the help of the community to prepare a public park at Annie’s Bay.

The group formed an agreement with the Bermuda Land Management Corporation for permission to create the Annie’s Bay Memorial Park south of Orange Hole Road in St David’s.

Work has started on the three-year project to develop the park from eight acres of invasive vegetation by creating paths with benches in a natural setting similar to what existed there before 1941, with cedars, palmettos and beach and dune plants.

Rick Spurling, the president of the society, said the group needed help with donated machines, tree clearing and endemic trees and plants.

He said a qualified and passionate team was working to bring the project to fruition.

A detailed conservation management plan has been prepared by landscape architect David Cox, which has approval of the BLMC and the support of Google, which is developing a communications link in the area.

Mr Spurling said the park will have nature reserves in St David’s to form a continuous green belt “full of history, views, beaches and nature trails”.

He said that before 1941 Annie’s Bay was the home of Tommy Fox, known to islanders as the “Uncrowned King of St David’s”.
