From ambition to reality: latest Bermuda Bar call
An Oxford scholar has turned his ambition into reality after being Called to the Bar.
Guy Cabral joined the island’s legal community on Friday before Chief Justice Larry Mussenden.
He also interned with Appleby during 2016-17 before starting at university. In his spare time, he writes on constitutional law and the law in relation to cryptocurrencies.
Mr Cabral began his pupillage with Appleby in September 2025. In his first year of the programme, he completed three seats, rotating through the insurance, corporate and dispute resolution departments.
He recently began his second year of the firm’s legal trainee programme, which is a 12-month seat in the dispute resolution department under the continued mentorship of John Wasty, partner and head of dispute resolution.
Mr Cabral said: “Having grown up with a close family connection to Appleby, to be Called to the Bar of Bermuda with the support of my new friends and colleagues here feels in many ways like the closing of a poetic circle.
“What began as a youthful ambition has become a reality through the guidance, encouragement and generosity of those around me.
“This past year of training at Appleby has been an honour and a privilege, and I have been fortunate to learn from lawyers of exceptional ability and character.
“I offer them my sincere thanks for the time and effort they devoted to my development.
“As I begin my career at the Bar, I look forward to returning that investment through dedicated service to my colleagues, my clients and the people of Bermuda as a faithful advocate and adviser.”
Mr Cabral holds a Master of Science in Taxation Law from the University of Oxford, for which he received the Field Court Tax Chambers Prize for the best overall performance in his cohort.
The advocate further holds a Master of Laws in International Commercial Law from University College London and a Bachelor of Jurisprudence from the University of Oxford.
Before joining Appleby, Mr Cabral worked as a research assistant at the Law Commission of England and Wales and as a freelance academic.
Mr Wasty said: “I am delighted to welcome Guy to the Bermuda Bar as part of Appleby’s busy and expanding dispute resolution team.
“He has a first-class mind, an innate ability to identify the crux of the issue, and brings a broad and deep intelligence to identifying and implementing solutions.”
Lalita Vaswani, a partner in the firm, added: “It has been a genuine pleasure to work with Guy over the past two years and to watch him grow in confidence and ability throughout his training.
“He is thoughtful, conscientious and brings a quiet determination to his work, together with an openness to learning that I have always valued.”
Sangheetaa Phary, counsel, added: “Guy’s work has been of a consistently high standard, making a very positive impression during his time with us.
“I have every confidence that he will have a successful and rewarding career at the Bar.”
