Residents will be able to avail themselves of free blood pressure screenings at an upcoming event marking Pharmacy Week.

The Bermuda Diabetes Association’s Community Pharmacy will offer the screenings at the facility on Princes Street in Hamilton next Friday between 9am and 1pm.

Celebrated from October 18 to 24, the charity said Pharmacy Week shines a spotlight on the pharmacists who play an important role in keeping communities healthy.

It said high blood pressure is often described as a silent condition, as it typically develops without noticeable symptoms, leaving many people unaware that their readings are elevated.

If left unmanaged, it can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and kidney disease.

The charity said a blood pressure check takes minutes but can provide valuable insight, helping to identify potential health concerns early and take action when needed.

It said the event on October 23 will also offer residents a chance to meet its pharmacy team, ask pertinent health questions and discover available support.

“We want people to know we're more than somewhere they come to collect a prescription,” said Melissa Levy-James, the head pharmacist at the BDA Community Pharmacy.

Ms Levy James said: “We're a friendly team who genuinely enjoy getting to know the people we serve.

“Pharmacy Week is the perfect excuse to invite everyone in, have a chat and show them that we're here for all sorts of health questions, big or small.

“Sometimes people just need a little reassurance or someone they feel comfortable asking a question.

“That's the kind of relationship we want to build with our community.”

From medication advice and support with managing ongoing health conditions, to everyday questions about health and wellbeing, the charity said community pharmacists are among the most accessible healthcare professionals.

It said the pharmacy is open to the entire community, not only those living with diabetes, adding that the facility operates as a social enterprise, with proceeds directly supporting the BDA.

In 2025, the pharmacy filled nearly 1,400 prescriptions, valued at over $160,000, at no cost to diabetes patients who were uninsured or under insured.

Appointments for the screenings must be booked in advance.
