Simon Horrell and the story of Tangles

When Simon Horrell arrived in Bermuda from England in the late 1970s, he could hardly have imagined that his passion for hairdressing would lead to a business that would become a fixture in the island's beauty industry for more than four decades.

Today, as the owner of Tangles, he reflects on a career built on creativity, consistency and, perhaps most importantly, relationships.

“My passion for hairdressing began at a very young age in England. I was always drawn to the industry's creativity and the satisfaction of making people look and feel their best.”

After arriving in Bermuda, Mr Horrell began working at an established salon, gaining experience and getting to know the island and its people. Eventually, he and a friend decided to venture out on their own.

“We shared a vision to create a place that offered excellent hairdressing in a welcoming, friendly environment,” he recalls.

The early years were exciting but demanding, requiring determination and a willingness to take risks. More than 40 years later, the principles on which Tangles was founded remain central to its success.

“We've always believed that good hairdressing, professionalism, and genuine customer care never go out of style.”

For Mr Horrell, one of the greatest rewards has been watching Tangles become a trusted name among generations of Bermudian families.

“We've been fortunate enough to build relationships with clients who have supported us for decades, and in some cases we've had the pleasure of looking after different generations of the same family.”

He believes that loyalty is particularly meaningful in a community as small as Bermuda, where reputation and word of mouth can make or break a business.

“People might initially come to you for a haircut, but they continue coming back because of how you make them feel.”

Of course, maintaining a successful salon for more than four decades has required more than excellent customer service.

Rising operating costs, staffing responsibilities and the challenges of importing products have all tested his resilience as a business owner.

“I've learnt that you must be adaptable, patient, and prepared to make difficult decisions when necessary.”

He says the industry itself has also undergone a dramatic transformation.

When Mr Horrell first arrived in Bermuda, clients drew inspiration largely from magazines and television. Today, social media has given them instant access to international trends, products and techniques.

“Clients have access to endless inspiration, and they're much more aware of new techniques, products and styles.”

While competition has increased, he considers that a positive development encouraging salons to maintain high standards and continue evolving.

Still, he insists that no amount of innovation can replace the fundamentals of good hairdressing: listening to clients, understanding their needs and delivering consistent results.

Behind the business are the people Mr Horrell credits with making its longevity possible.

“I'm proud of the relationships we've built, our clients' loyalty, and the fact that after more than four decades Tangles remains a familiar and respected name in Bermuda.”

He is particularly appreciative of the stylists who have devoted significant portions of their careers to the salon, helping to create the welcoming environment clients have come to expect.

As he considers the future, his ambitions are less about reinvention than preserving what has made Tangles successful while allowing the business to continue growing.

“To me, Tangles' legacy isn't just about hair. It's about the people, the friendships, the memories and the sense of family we've created along the way.”

And for a young man whose career began thousands of miles away in England, that legacy is something worth celebrating.

“If people remember Tangles as a place where they always felt welcome, were treated well and received excellent service, then I feel I've achieved something truly worthwhile.”
