St David's 164/6

Social Club 1289

Loren Marshall hit a half-century and Delyone Borden took three wickets as St David's kept their remarkable Twenty20 record intact at Lords yesterday.

The holders still haven't lost a game in two years, and while Social Club came close, they were never in any real danger of toppling the defending champions.

With only 10-men, the newly-promoted team lost their last three wickets in three balls, with Borden claiming two, and Lionel Cann running out Winston Simmons to give his side a 36-run victory with 13 balls remaining.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, St David's lost Adrian Burrows and Shae Pitcher early on, and had to rely on a 30-run stand between Can (22) and OJ Pitcher (25) to steady the ship. Cann though took a big swing at a straight delivery from Garnell Hollis and was bowled, and at 52 for three, the holders wobbled slightly.

If Damian Rabain had held on to a straight forward catch to dismiss Pitcher soon after, it might have been a different game entirely, but he didn't, and he and Borden added 38 runs before Pitcher was finally out.

That just brought Marshall to the crease, and he took the game to the Social Club bowlers, depositing them to all parts of the ground, and in the sea on a couple of occasions.

In reply Social Club lost wickets too regularly, and despite entertaining 38s from Charlie Marshall and Nakia Smith they still fell short.

Western Stars 237/4

Commercial XI 135/6

The Commercial League were given a rude introduction to Twenty20 cricket as they suffered a 102-run hammering at the hands of Western Stars in the first game at Lords yesterday.

A stand of 170 between Justin Robinson and Brian Hall for the fourth Stars' wicket took the game away from the competition's new-boys, whose best bowler was 53-year-old Michael Campbell.

Robinson blasted a 58-ball century, hitting 10 sixes in the process, while Hall finished on an unbeaten 75 off just 43 balls.

In reply, the Commercial XI never really got close to their target, eventually finishing on 135-6, with Allen Walker (39) and Ian Coke (32*) their top scorers.

Somerset 235/3

Somerset Bridge 16?

A century from Ricky Hoyte guided 2008 Lindo's Twenty20 finalist Somerset to a winning start in the 2010 competition with a comfortable 74 run victory over Somerset Bridge at Somerset Cricket Club.

Batting first at home, Hoyte opened the innings and helped lay down a foundation to post a impossible total for their opponents to chase down, top scoring for the hosts with an unbeaten knock of 104.

Fellow top order batsman Azeem Pitcher also helped himself with a healthy run total, posting 49 before falling one short of his deserved half century.

Wendell Dottin scored 20 not out to keep the scoreboard ticking over, while Noel Woods and Marcus Simmons both took one wicket each.

In reply, Caisey Smith scored 55 not out in a losing effort, while veteran Richard Knights scored 21 to put up some sort of resistance at the top of the order.

Willow Cuts 194/8

Warwick 116

Bergon Spencer and Antonio Darrell got Willow Cuts off to a winning start as they led a total team effort for Cuts as the side won by 78 runs over Warwick at Somerset Cricket Club.

Batting first, Spencer smashed an unbeaten 98 to set his side on their way to a very respectable total, while Samail Bichanlael took four wickets for Warwick to restrict the hosts from posting a much bigger total.

In response, Bichanlael stroked his way to 67 but couldn't find a partnership with a teammate to make inroads to get the required total. 13-year-old Darrell snatched four wickets for a meagre 12 runs.

PHC 137/4

Leg Trappers 14¼

Leg Trappers got their season off to a flying start with a six-wicket win over Premier Division side PHC at Wellington Oval yesterday.

Winning the toss and opting to field, Trappers, who were unable to field a team in the First Division this year, restricted PHC to 137 from 20 overs. Jordache Rawson, David Pringle, Durnferd Davis and Johann Oosthuizen took a wicket apiece for Trappers, while Ricardo Brangman (41) and Jason Anderson (38) top-scored for PHC.

In reply Stephen Drake (49) and Gary Knight (27) put on 78 for the first wicket, before both fell to Kyle Lightbourne in consecutive deliveries. Andre Smit and Rawson followed soon after as PHC dragged themselves back into the game.

However Eugenne Johannes hit the winning runs as Trappers won with four overs to spare.

St. George's CC 287/4

Flatts Victoria 136

There were runs aplenty at Wellington Oval as St. George's cruised to a 152 run win over Flatts in yesterday's second game.

Troy Hall barely top scored 85, with veteran Dean Minors scoring 84 and skipper Oronde Bascome adding 68 as the side scored 287.

Logan Phillips claimed two wickets for the visitors.

In reply Phillip Burgess scored 39 for Flatts as they were bowled out for 136, with Ajun Lambe taking two wickets.

Cleveland County 167/4

Devonshire Rec. 129

Allan Douglas Jr. struck a century in 20 overs play at Sea Breeze Oval yesterday when his whirlwind innings of 105 led Cleveland to a 38-run victory over Devonshire Rec. in a game reduced to 16 overs because of a delay in getting the pitch properly preparing for play.

It marked the second straight day his team had dominated opponents at that venue, having done so on the previous day when they retained the Eastern Counties Cup with a draw over host club Bailey's Bay.

Douglas rescued Cleveland in a contest that started off badly for them when opener Bryce Daniels was caught behind off Steven Bremar's first ball of the game.

But the early dismissal didn't seem to bother Douglas who appeared the relish the challenge of laying a solid foundation for the team and he did it in style by ripping the bowling apart, sending fierce shots to all parts of the ground. He finished hitting eight fours and 10 sixes, joining the other opener Keishon Lightbourne (21) in a second wicket stand that added 101 runs.

Also among the runs for Cleveland were Makai Young with 20 and Dennis Musson Jr. with 10 not out.

Spinner Kameron Fox was the best bowler for Devonshire taking two wickets for 24 runs off three overs.

Opener Chris Foggo struck a spirited 50 in reply for Devonshire whose batting just fell short with only tailender Lloyd Smith and opener Steven Bremar displaying any semblance of confidence at the wicket with knocks of 17 and 16 respectively.

Foggo struck four fours and four sixes during his stay at the wicket, the best partnership coming when he and Bremar added 40 runs in quick time for Devonshire.

But once they were separated Cleveland bowlers steadily gained the upper hand with Devonshire losing their next seven wickets for the addition of 62 runs.

Kian Butterfield led the wicket haul with three for 27 from four overs while Allan Douglas Jr. claimed two for 19 from two overs and Machai McGowan had two for 31 from three overs.

Bailey's Bay 97

Under-19's 98/3

Bermuda Under-19s were given a boost in their opening 20/20 game at Sea Breeze Oval yesterday with a surprise seven-wicket victory over a weakened Bailey's Bay side.

Bay, far from the strength of their Eastern Counties Cup line-up the previous day, had a fragile batting lineup and it showed from the outset when openers skipper Terryn Fray and Corey Hill failed to reach double figures. Of their batsmen only three offered any real defiance with Cal Dill Jr., batting at number eight, top scoring on 26 while number three bat Kyle Hodsoll followed on 25 and number six Jemeiko Marshall 13.

Latif Trott was the top bowler for the Under-19s with three wickets for 11 runs off four overs while Kamal Easton claimed three for 21 off four overs with a maiden.

The youngsters reached victory in 16.4 overs with Shaquil Jones leading the way with 31. Tre Manders was next only 23 while Christian Burgess was not out on 16 when victory was reached.

Jones and Manders added 42 for the second wicket after they lost their first wicket with four runs on the board.

Corey Hill was the best of the Bay bowlers with 1-13.
