Camping over the Cup Match weekend will be allowed to go ahead after a change in Covid-19 regulations this week.The relaxation meant that people can stay overnight in tents, as long as they do not leave the campsite between midnight and 5am, except in the case of an emergency.The Public Health (Covid-19 Emergency Powers) Amendment Regulations 2020 were published in the Government’s Official Gazette on Tuesday.The statement said: “A person may remain in a tent which is not his home after 11pm, provided that he does not leave the camp site in which the tent is located during the hours of midnight and 5am, except for a medical or other emergency and he complies at all times with relevant guidance.”The amended regulations will be in force between July 29 and the morning of August 3.The statement added that the rule change did not affect requirements in other legislation that related to “prohibition on camping in an area which is not designated camping area, requirement for written permission, etc”.The amendments also said that, although boats cannot be used for recreation after 11pm, someone can stay later on a boat as long as the vessel is “berthed, anchored or moored” between 11pm and 5am.The regulation stipulated that anyone who remained on a boat overnight cannot leave it between midnight and 5am unless there is an emergency and that they must comply “at all times with relevant guidance”.Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, the public works minister, the head of the Cabinet sub-committee working to reopen the island, said last Thursday that the use of beaches and camping over the Cup Match weekend would be considered.He added: “We are mindful of our traditions of summer time in Bermuda and especially during this month — where, in my office, I am completely surrounded by those blue and blue people.”Colonel Burch said permission for overnight camping would be “based on a number of factors” including “how well we behave”.The amendments were approved by the Governor, John Rankin, on the advice of Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health.
