New league still seeking players

Signed up: Glenn Blakeney

The Warrington “Soup” Zuill Masters Twenty20 League will still go ahead this summer provided a minimum of 90 players sign up by the end of the month.

“I don’t want to do less than that and right now we have 60-odd names,” said organiser Hoyt Zuill, whose plan is to feature six teams in the inaugural league which will play matches at St David’s, Sea Breeze Oval and Somerset Cricket Club on Friday nights and Saturdays from June.

Jeff Richardson and Glenn Blakeney are two of the latest players to sign up, joining Masters team players such as Clevie Wade, Charlie Marshall, Ricky Brangman, Ricky Hill, Allen Richardson and Dave Greenidge.

The opportunity is also open to Evening and Commercial League players over the age of 45, while women under the age of 45 can also sign up to play in one of the teams.

“They would go into the draft like the men and can be any age,” Zuill said. “I sent e-mails to St David’s and Bailey’s Bay about using their fields on Saturdays and also spoke to the Somerset president [Alfred Maybury]. “The games will be played every other weekend, hopefully starting the later part of June and go to the end of the season.”

The league will have teams named after former cricket legends such as the two oldest former Cup Match players, Woodgate Simmons and Leroy “Tubby” Richardson. The other four teams will be named after Lloyd James, Calvin “Bummy” Symonds, Randy Butler and the late Warrington Zuill, a Cup Match historian.

The teams will be called Tubby’s Legends, Woodgate’s Keepers, Lloyd’s Drivers, Bummy’s Skippers, Butler’s Spinners and Soup’s Sportsmen.

Players wishing to sign up can contact Hoyt Zuill via e-mail at somari@blessed.bm or on 504-4698.
