WIA wallop Pembroke United
of the Commercial Cricket League's new League Cup competition on Sunday but all three clubs are still in the running in Group B where North Village upset Forties in a close finish.
WIA thrashed Pembroke by 121 runs at Police field and their game against Devonshire Stars at Shelly Bay this Sunday will decide who goes into the final on August 29. Stars beat Pembroke by six wickets in the first match.
Sandys Sports Club are favourites to join WIA in the final. Even if they lose to Forties at Nationals on Sunday they could go through on superior run rate after beating North Village the previous week by five wickets. Sandys' run rate is currently 6.70 compared with Forties' 4.38.
WIA gained revenge for a recent six-wicket league defeat by outplaying Pembroke United.
A half-century by Randy Liverpool and useful contributions from Olwin Clarke (40), Chris Graham-Ward (29) and Andy Boyce (20) lifted WIA to 222 in 36.3 overs.
Liverpool cracked four sixes and five fours in his 53 while Clarke clouted seven fours, Boyce five fours, and Graham-Ward a six and three fours on his return to the Commercial League.
Despite a valiant innings of 35 by Thomas Ball, which contained five fours, Pembroke toiled against a WIA attack led by Alex Walker (three for 11) and Boyce (three for 25) and were dismissed for 99 in 23 overs.
North Village outmanoeuvred Forties to win by 14 runs at Garrison field but may regret setting huge boundaries almost to the full width of the ground as they saw their run rate drop from 5.89 the previous week to 5.23.
Elliott Jennings and Mike Levon played key roles in Village's victory.
Jennings helped Village to 183 in 39.5 overs by hitting a six and three fours in a solid innings of 57 and then took one for 21 from five overs. Levon followed up his breezy 29 with two for 24.
Newcomer John King, the ninth bowler tried, was Forties' most successful with four for 24 from five overs.
Forties began their reply with skipper Gordon Campbell taking two boundaries off Donville Yarde's opening over but Derek Bell struck a vital blow when he dismissed leading run-getter Gary Edwards first ball in the second over.
Bell (two for 18) also sent back Campbell for 20 as Village routed Forties' top order, leaving them in disarray at 54 for six.
But a patient seventh-wicket stand of 59 between Adrian Jennings (31) and wicket-keeper Neil Speight initiated a spirited fightback and they carried the total to 113 in the 30th over.
Speight was ninth out for 40 at 137 as Dion Ball (two for 22) snapped up two wickets with successive balls but last pair Mike Evans and Oliver Franks gave Village more anxious moments by putting on 29 before Franks was bowled with seven balls remaining with the total 169. Evans' unbeaten 23 included two sixes and a four.
