Cancer workshops planned
workshops in Bermuda next week.
Professor of Surgery and Immunology at the University of Toronto, Dr. Rudolf E. Falk, will speak as a guest of the Patients Assistance League and Service (PALS).
Next Thursday a private session for health care professionals, entitled "New Concepts in Cancer Treatment and Prevention'', will be held at the Chamber of Commerce.
It will be open to physicians interested in new ways of supporting cancer patients, and nurses, dieticians, therapists and other health care professionals who provide care for cancer patients and their families.
The purpose is to exchange information on traditional and new ideas in health care prevention, promotion and treatment.
Next Saturday morning (February 5) a similarly titled workshop will be open to cancer patients, their families and friends, caregiver volunteers, individuals concerned with their health and the costs of medical care, scientists curious about non-toxic drugs and anyone unable to attend the other session.
Dr. Falk is an advocate of complementing standard medical procedures with new approaches to cancer treatment, stressing the roles of detoxifying the body, increasing nutritional health and positive attitude in patient care.
PALS chairman Ms Ann Smith Gordon said: "Cancer is a frightening disease -- the word still strikes terror into everyone's heart.
"Since Bermuda doesn't always have ready access to the latest research and educational information, Dr. Falk's seminars will be a learning experience for all.
"The public session is a chance for the patient, his or her family and caregivers to learn to cope with the normal cyclical variations of cancer and its treatment, and to learn the value of nutrition and a positive attitude toward treatment and recovery.
"For health care professionals, the session will be a chance to glean new information on new cancer research, particularly with regard to Dr. Falk's approach of coupling traditional medical treatment with non-medicinal programmes.'' Commented Mr. Cummings V. Zuill, chairman of the Centre on Philanthropy: "Volunteer initiatives bring new ideas, create new thoughts and are catalysts to change.'' Dr. Rudolf E. Falk.
