That was the message from Minister of Culture and Social Rehabilitation Dale Butler as he highlighted May as Foster Care Month.

He explained: "In Bermuda, more than 100 youth are not living at home because their own families are unable to care for them. With guidance and support from caring adults, youth in foster care are capable of realising their fullest potential. Foster parenting is a significant and rewarding opportunity that helps shape brighter futures."

"All children deserve a safe and happy life. Young people in foster care especially need nurturing adults on their side because their own families are in crisis.

"In order to be comprehensive in our celebration of May as Foster Care Month we must salute and honour the compassionate people who make a difference by serving as foster parents, relative caregivers, mentors, advocates and social workers," he said.

"Thanks to these unsung heroes, many formerly abused or neglected youths will either safely reunite with their parents, be cared for by relatives, or be adopted by loving families. We urge you to join the ranks of these heroes. Every young person in foster care benefits from a meaningful connection to a caring adult who becomes a supportive and lasting presence in his or her life. Now is the time to get involved. No matter how much time you have to give, you have the power to do something that will change a life for a young person in foster care."

The Minister explained that those who have a few weeks to spare can become a respite care provider, which is a supportive way to assist foster parents. They could also tutor a child because they sometimes change schools frequently or have social or behavioural challenges, fostered children can benefit from extra academic support. Volunteers are also needed to help the young people explore career options or acquire new job skills.

"If you have more time, become a foster parent," he urged. "Caring families are especially needed for older youth, siblings, and children with special needs. Mentor a young person. Research shows that children and youth with mentors earn higher grades and improve their relationships with friends and families. Be a change agent. Stay involved year-round. Make a pact to focus on improving the lives of children in foster care."
