Veterans are not just for November 11
The needs of Bermuda’s war veteran population are growing more urgent as veterans, along with their widows, pass the 90-year age mark. The Bermuda Legion, already recruiting volunteers for Remembrance Day, issued a reminder that veterans aren’t just for November 11.Welfare caseworker Carol Everson said the Legion hopes to build up a confidential database of volunteers, and appropriately qualified caregivers, to assist with the Island’s ageing veterans.“We continue to work to increase awareness of the veterans’ contribution as younger people — to Bermuda and to world history — so that we continue to provide for their needs. We work with other charities and with Government departments.”Ms Everson added that many may be unaware of the assistance they’re eligible for.“Our veterans may have access to help from the Royal British Legion, the Canadian Legion and the RAF Benevolent Fund,” she said. “However, we aim to step in swiftly with help in Bermuda wherever necessary.”As medical costs climb with age, benefits — which have been static since 2007 — can pale in relation to needs, she said. The Bermuda Legion can now provide advocacy for former and serving soldiers of the Bermuda Regiment, although its charitable scope remains focused on veterans and their widows. The group distributed $65,000 of its own signature poppies in 2012, which Ms Everson called its best year yet.The Bermuda Legion also issued a reminder that family members are eligible to take part in Remembrance Day by wearing the medals of their relatives who have passed away and walking with the November 11 parade.
