Deflected free-kick sinks the Hogges
Carolina Dynamo 2
Bermuda Hogges 1
Bermuda Hogges were undone by a deflected free-kick that wrong-footed debutant goalkeeper Daniel Johnson to hand Carolina Dynamo a home victory on Saturday night.
Hogges were trailing after 20 minutes following some poor defending but equalised on the stroke of half-time through diminutive striker Shayne Hollis who poked home from close range.
But Dynamo struck back midway through the second-half when a free-kick given away by Ernest Signor took a wicked deflection to beat keeper Johnson.
Hogges searched for a leveller with Keishen Bean and Jaylon Bather both going close late on.
Technical director Derek Broadley believed the Hogges deserved a point from Saturday's penultimate game of the season. "We fielded a very young team and it was an unlucky goal to concede," he said.
"The second half was even with both teams failing to create any clear-cut chances.
"They were awarded a free-kick from 20 yards out that should have gone to us.
"Ernest got spun around by their player that resulted with a pile up which the referee gave to them.
"It was a poor decision and sod's law the kick took a deflection and wrong-footed Daniel Johnson in goal.
"I thought Damon Ming was excellent. Troy Tucker and all the other youngsters did well."
Before the game New England Revolution winger Khano Smith presented Carolina Dynamo with a signed Bermuda shirt.
Smith, a Bermuda international, played 12 games for the Dynamo back in 2003, scoring four goals.
Hogges, who are bottom of the league standings, end their PDL season at West Virginia Chaos tonight. Midfielder Seion Darrell will be available after missing Saturday's game through suspension.
